"Mender of Hearts"

"Mender of Hearts"

Behind This Painting:

This painting was birthed from a deeply personal season of healing, one I can only describe as raw.

At the center of the piece is an anatomical heart, carved into thick layers of paint. The act of cutting into the canvas was intentional. It wasn’t just about form… it was about feeling. Beneath the surface lies an older painting I did from a previous season of my life. I didn’t paint over it to erase it, I carved into it to reveal it. Because that’s how healing often works, not by covering our pain, but by confronting it, peeling back the layers, and allowing what’s buried to rise.

In this season, God brought me back to the operating table. I’ve been there before but this time, I didn’t try to guide His hand. I didn’t try to control what parts of my heart He could touch. I surrendered. Fully.

And it hurt.

It was raw.

This piece is what surrender looks like in color and texture. The heart represents the exposed places in me. Parts I used to hide, those I thought were too messy or too damaged to be touched by love. But God our Healer knows exactly where to press, exactly where to cut, and exactly how to mend.

And He doesn’t just fix what’s broken.

He transforms it.

He turns scar tissue into softness.

He turns wounds into windows.

He turns hearts of stone into hearts that bloom.

That’s why this painting is called Mender of Hearts because that’s who God has been to me. Not just a comforter, not just a listener, but a skilled and compassionate Surgeon. One who goes to the root and rebuilds from the inside out.

“I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.”

—Ezekiel 36:26
